Windows 7 Tutorial : Exploring Windows 7

Are you wondering about the Windows 7 operating system? Perhaps you are trying to decide if you want to upgrade from XP or Vista. Maybe you are thinking about buying a new computer and want to learn more about Windows 7 first. With these questions in mind, we explored Windows 7 and would like to share what we found with you.

In this lesson, we will compare Windows 7 with previous Vista and XP operating systems. In addition, we will discuss performance improvements and review the major features.

What is Windows 7?

Windows 7 is an operating system that Microsoft has produced for use on personal computers. It is the follow-up to the Windows Vista Operating System, which was released in 2006. An operating system allows your computer to manage software and perform essential tasks. It is also a Graphical User Interface (GUI) that allows you to visually interact with your computer’s functions in a logical, fun, and easy way.
For example, in Windows 7 you can view two windows side by side by using the Aero Snap feature. This feature automatically sizes—or snaps—two windows to fit together on the screen, allowing you the convenience of viewing them next to each other.

How is Windows 7 different from Vista or XP?

Based on customer feedback, Microsoft is promoting that it has simplified the PC experience by making many functions easier to use, such as better previewing on the Task Bar, instant searching for files or media, and easy sharing via HomeGroup networking. It also claims improved performance by supporting 64-bit processing, which is increasingly the standard in desktop PCs. In addition, Windows 7 is designed to sleep and resume faster, use less memory, and recognize USB devices faster. There are also new possibilities with media streaming and touch-screen capabilities.
The above are improvements for both Vista and XP users. If you are already a Vista user, the improvements to Windows 7 will be more subtle. Vista users are likely already familiar with features like the Aero visual functions, Start Menu organization, and Search. However, if you are currently using XP, then you may require a bit of an adjustment period.

Improvements for both Vista and XP users

  • New Taskbar and System Tray
  • Quick Desktop View button
  • Improved Start Up, Sleep, and Resume performance
  • Improved power management saves memory and battery life
  • Libraries to improve file access and organization
  • Action Center for system maintenance, back ups, and troubleshooting
  • User Account customization of notifications
  • Improved back up
  • New wallpapers and themes
  • Improved gadgets
  • New premium games, including Chess Titans, Mahjong Titans, and Inkball
  • Advanced Calculator functions, including saving history
  • Improved networking via HomeGroups
  • Passkey protection with networks
  • Device Stage for recognizing USB devices faster
  • Windows Mail replaced by Windows Live

Changes and improvements from Windows XP only

  • New Start icon
  • Aero Snap, Shake, and Peek
  • Desktop icons like Computer and My Documents now accessed through Start Menu
  • Larger icons and hidden icons in the Taskbar
  • Quick Launch toolbar replaced by pinning a program to the Taskbar
  • Jump Lists for easier access
  • Search Bar in the Start Up Menu
  • Run command accessed through Start Menu's Search Bar
  • Faster and smoother gaming components
  • Parental Controls for monitoring computer use
  • Update feature that eliminates web surfing for patches

Will Windows 7 improve my computer's performance?

As previously mentioned, Microsoft is promoting that Windows 7 is designed to:
  • Decrease Start up and Shutdown times by 20 seconds
  • Go to Sleep and Resume faster
  • Use up less memory
  • Pop up Search results faster
  • Reconnect to your wireless network more quickly
  • Recognize USB devices faster
This is promising news, because slow wait time appeared to be one of the chief complaints regarding Windows Vista. Windows 7 also saves time by not booting up various devices during Start Up unless they are currently being used. In other words, if you are not using a Bluetooth device when you start the computer Windows 7 will not waste time by running that program in the background; it will wait until you have plugged it in.
However, performance tests of Windows 7 indicate that actual improvements vary and depend greatly on the conditions of your specific computer and the programs you are running. We will go into more detail regarding your computer's ability to run Windows 7 in future lessons.

What can you do in Windows 7?

Aero

Aero is an interface that makes your visual interactions with the desktop fun and easy.
  • Aero Peek makes your open windows transparent so you can see your desktop. It also allows you to peek at items in your taskbar for a thumbnail preview.
  • Aero Snap is a quick way to resize your windows to make them easier to read, organize, and compare.
  • Aero Flip allows you to preview all open windows from a central window or 3D view that you can flip through.
  • Aero Shake allows you to take your mouse and shake only the open window you want to focus on, and the rest will disappear.

Taskbar

The taskbar is now more convenient to use, with larger views and easier access.
  • Jump Lists allow you to right-click an icon in the taskbar and immediately access items like music, videos, or webpages you use on a regular basis.
  • Pin allows you to place programs on the taskbar and rearrange the order of the icons.
  • Action Center allows you to control the alerts and pop-ups you receive regarding maintenance and security.

Search

As soon as you start typing in the Search bar of the Start Menu, you will instantly see a list of relevant options grouped by categories with highlighted keywords and text. This allows you to easily scan for the documents, music, pictures, and emails you are looking for.

Libraries

Libraries allow you to organize your files in one place so they are easy to search and access.

Windows 7 has four default Libraries for documents, music, pictures, and videos; however, you can customize and create you own Libraries based on your needs.

Gadgets

You can select or download gadgets such as a slide show, calendar, or weather update to add to your desktop. The live updates of some gadgets like weather, stocks, and feed headlines are quite convenient.

Additional things you can do in Windows 7

  • Device Stage: When you plug a device into your computer such as a camera, mobile phone, or flash drive, a window will open up with a menu of popular tasks, status information, and options for your device.
  • Windows Live Essentials: Windows Live Essentials is free software that enhances the Windows 7 experience. It replaces Windows Mail and allows you to email, instant message, edit photos, and blog.
  • HomeGroup: HomeGroup allows you to connect two or more PCs on a home network to easily share and access files and printers.
  • Windows Touch: You can use Windows Touch with a touch-screen PC to browse and flick through the screen using your fingers with multi-touch technology.
  • Remote Media Streaming: With Remote Media Streaming, you can access your music, pictures, and videos stored on your home PC remotely using the Internet.

Conclusion

By now, you should have a better idea of what Windows 7 is all about. Now you can start considering if upgrading to Windows 7 will be a good choice for you. In making this decision, you may want to compare your desires with what your current computer is capable of.

While Microsoft is promoting that Windows 7 can be used on older computers, this does not mean that all of the features will be available or work the same as they will on a new computer. For example, we have found that some of the Aero features, like Peek and 3D, do not work on one of our older, 32-bit computers.

In addition, upgrading to Windows 7 from XP is more complicated than upgrading from Vista. In the next lesson, we will review the cost and requirements for running Windows 7 which are important factors in making a decision.

SoundCloud resuscitates home screen with personalized playlists

After laying off 40% of its staff and securing $169 million in emergency funding, SoundCloud’s first product push is a much needed step in the right direction. It’s filling its home page with personalized playlists and best of collections from top genres rather than other content like it’s feed. The hope is to make SoundCloud instantly accessible to new users and a more reliable place to discover fresh songs for long-time loyalists.
In my recent deep-dive into SoundCloud’s strategy, I outlined its need to differentiate itself from Spotify by focusing on its $5 tier of ad-free access to independent music, legally grey remixes and DJ sets you can’t find elsewhere, and helping artists earn money beyond royalties through commerce. In line with that strategy, today’s redesign lets SoundCloud highlight the best of its unique archive of user uploaded songs.
SoundCloud’s new CEO Kerry Trainor tells me “The new SoundCloud home is a more curated, personalized way to discover amazing creators first—years ahead of the mainstream charts”.

Amazon Echo’s multi-room music streaming feature now supports Spotify and SiriusXM

Just in time for all of those ridiculous holiday playlists, Amazon’s added two key players to the Echo’s multi-room streaming feature. Spotify and SiriusXM now join the ranks of TuneIn, iHeartRadio, Pandora and, naturally, Amazon’s own Music Unlimited service.

The feature, which hit the smart speakers over the summer, makes it possible to stream songs to multiple Echos on a single network. It’s also possible to play music on individual devices in various parts of one’s home, by telling Alexa to “play my music” and then specifying the a location. So, you know, like, “Alexa, play The Kinks on upstairs from Spotify.”

As we noted back in August, the feature is a sort of cheaper alternative to traditional premium multi-room music options like Sonos. Of course, since then, Sonos has also gotten into the Alexa business. So, the lines of blurring, I guess. Of course, the new Echos also sport better built in sound, along with audio out, so you can cobble together a pretty okay multi-room system on the cheap.

Spotify functionality is coming to a bunch of countries, including the U.S., U.K., Germany, Canada and Ireland. SiriusXM satellite radio, on the other hand, is only currently available in the States.

Scientists Make Kale Plants Glow In The Dark With Firefly Enzymes

A team of MIT research have engineered plants that glow in the dark, using luciferase, the enzyme that lights up firefly butts. The answer to the question of why, precisely, anyone would want to do such a thing is clearly, “because science is cool.”
The longer and slightly more boring answer, however, has to do with energy savings. Thus far, the scientists have only been able to replicate the the results on arugula, kale, spinach and watercress, but their plans for the future are much grander, including trees that could stand in for outdoor electric light.
“The vision is to make a plant that will function as a desk lamp — a lamp that you don’t have to plug in,” says Professor Michael Strano, the study’s senior author. “The light is ultimately powered by the energy metabolism of the plant itself.”

Strano cites a study claiming that lighting is responsible for about 20-percent of energy consumption worldwide. Glow-in-the dark plants could potentially alleviate some of that strain, using their own energy to illuminate a space after nightfall. Of course, that’s all still a ways off. So far, the team has been able to make a plant glow for around three-and-a half hours, but the illumination they give off is apparently one-thousandth of the light required to read by.

So, best to stick with that new Kindle, until the team figures out how to improve things. That will require a better concentration of the enzymes involved, and a way of improving how those enzymes are released.

According to MIT, this isn’t the first time scientists have attempted to use these enzymes to light up plants, but the process the team is using has improved efficiency quite a bit. The process involves dunking plants in a solution made out of luciferase, luciferin and coenzyme A (a combination of which creates fireflies’ glow) and applying pressure that essentially forces the solution into plant pores.

The researchers are also able to turn the light off by adding a luciferase inhibitor, which doubles as a sort of chemical light switch for when it’s time to turn those glowing plants off.

T-Mobile plans pay TV service in 2018

T-Mobile is getting into the paid TV business, with the acquisition of Layer3 TV, a TV tech company, and plans announced to launch its own offering sometime next year. T-Mobile’s John Legere revealed the pay TV ambitions for the so-called “Un-carrier” on its YouTube channel today.

The plan involves building a service that avoids long-term contracts, as well as complex bundles and billing. Layer3 TV, which offers streaming TV and online video combined into a single service offering, might provide some idea of what it’ll look like in practice once it launches, though the acquisition could also be more about its underlying technology.
T-Mobile already offers preferential streaming for select video services using its “Binge On” unlimited streaming program – it’ll be interesting to see how entering the streaming over-the-top TV business will affect those relationships with other competing services.
Legere characterized the current state of the paid TV business to that of the mobile industry when T-Mobile began its “uncarrier” campaign, and clearly seeks to try to provoke a similar kind of competition in this legacy-dominated industry.
T-Mobile is aiming its service at both home and mobile consumption, though it’s obviously going to put a lot of emphasis on its mobile delivery solutions and platforms given its other business interest.

How To Enable SSH On Raspberry Pi Tutorial

----------------------------

How To Enable SSH On Raspberry PI

You can access the command line of a Raspberry Pi remotely from another computer or device on the same network using SSH.
The Raspberry Pi will act as a remote device: you can connect to it using a client on another machine.
You only have access to the command line, not the full desktop environment. For a full remote desktop, see VNC. Video Tutorial How TO Install VNC .

Enable SSH

As of the November 2016 release, Raspbian has the SSH server disabled by default. It can be enabled manually from the desktop:
------

  1. Launch Raspberry Pi Configuration from the Preferences menu
  2. Navigate to the Interfaces tab
  3. Select Enabled next to SSH
  4. Click OK
Alternatively, raspi-config can be used in the terminal:
  1. Enter sudo raspi-config in a terminal window
  2. Select Interfacing Options
  3. Navigate to and select SSH
  4. Choose Yes
  5. Select Ok

Installing VNC (Virtual Network Computing) On Raspberry PI [YouTube Video]

Installing VNC (Virtual Network Computing) On Raspberry PI

Sometimes it is not convenient to work directly on the Raspberry Pi. Maybe you would like to work on it from another device by remote control.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

VNC is a graphical desktop sharing system that allows you to remotely control the desktop interface of one computer (running VNC Server) from another computer or mobile device (running VNC Viewer). VNC Viewer transmits the keyboard and either mouse or touch events to VNC Server, and receives updates to the screen in return.
You will see the desktop of the Raspberry Pi inside a window on your computer or mobile device. You'll be able to control it as though you were working on the Raspberry Pi itself.

VNC Connect from RealVNC is included with Raspbian. It consists of both VNC Server, which allows you to control your Raspberry Pi remotely, and VNC Viewer, which allows you to control desktop computers remotely from your Raspberry Pi should you want to.
You must enable VNC Server before you can use it: instructions for this are given below. By default, VNC Server gives you remote access to the graphical desktop that is running on your Raspberry Pi, as though you were sitting in front of it.
However, you can also use VNC Server to gain graphical remote access to your Raspberry Pi if it is headless or not running a graphical desktop. For more information on this, see Creating a virtual desktop, further below.

Enabling VNC Server

On your Raspberry Pi, run the following commands to make sure you have the latest version of VNC Connect:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install realvnc-vnc-server realvnc-vnc-viewer

Now enable VNC Server. You can do this graphically or at the command line.

Enabling VNC Server graphically

  • On your Raspberry Pi, boot into the graphical desktop.
  • Select Menu > Preferences > Raspberry Pi Configuration > Interfaces.
  • Ensure VNC is Enabled.

Enabling VNC Server at the command line

You can enable VNC Server at the command line using raspi-config:

sudo raspi-config

Now, enable VNC Server by doing the following:
  • Navigate to Interfacing Options.
  • Scroll down and select VNC > Yes.

Connecting to your Raspberry Pi with VNC Viewer

There are two ways to connect to your Raspberry Pi. You can use either or both, depending on what works best for you.

Establishing a direct connection

Direct connections are quick and simple providing you're joined to the same private local network as your Raspberry Pi. For example, this might be a wired or wireless network at home, at school, or in the office).
  • On your Raspberry Pi (using a terminal window or via SSH) use these instructions or run ifconfig to discover your private IP address.
  • On the device you'll use to take control, download VNC Viewer. For best results, use the compatible app from RealVNC.
  • Enter your Raspberry Pi's private IP address into VNC Viewer:

Establishing a cloud connection

You are entitled to use RealVNC's cloud service for free, provided that remote access is for educational or non-commercial purposes only.
Cloud connections are convenient and encrypted end-to-end. They are highly recommended for connecting to your Raspberry Pi over the internet. There's no firewall or router reconfiguration, and you don't need to know the IP address of your Raspberry Pi, or provide a static one.
